Johannesburg International Airport
HELPDESK: +27 (0)11 921 6262
Johannesburg International Airport (JIA), the world-class air transport hub of southern Africa, hosts airlines from all five continents and caters for more than 13 million passengers each year. This airport, ACSA's flagship success story, is the busiest in South Africa – and its passenger traffic has even overtaken that of Cairo.
It's not surprising, then, that JIA, as Africa's premier airport, offers everything a passenger might want on a journey - from the usual necessities such as accommodation, banking and transport, to a chapel and a prayer room, a medical clinic and Internet access.
Many of the airport's impressive features were ushered in with the extensive development of the international and domestic terminals in recent years - such as the R268-million investment in the International Arrivals terminal the duty-free retail mall the 4 000-bay multi-storey parkade the two public transport termini the luxury Airport Sun Inter-Continental Hotel and the new Domestic Terminal.
JIA, then, has changed dramatically in the past few years. One of the airport's greatest successes lies in its commercial transformation. The R210-million duty-free retail mall, for example, has helped JIA increase its net operating income by more than 120% and nowadays more than 100 companies operate from the airport.
But JIA's commercial capacity does not end with retail malls in the terminals: in fact, ACSA's "aerocity" idea extends these business opportunities further than the airports themselves. The company, aware of the special role its airports play in the development of regional economies, is punting JIA as a gateway into the rest of Africa.
Another groundbreaking commercial development is the Johannesburg International Trade Bureau, a permanent exhibition facility that will offer South African exporters unparalleled access to international business visitors and, as a result, to foreign markets.
It's clear that JIA plays an important role in serving Africa’s air transport needs. In doing this, the airport operations are run very tightly - an approach that has made JIA one of the most cost-effective airports in the world, according to a report by the United Kingdom Transportation Research Laboratory in 1999.

Cape Town International Airport
HELPDESK: Tel +27 (0)21 937 1200
Cape Town International Airport, South Africa's second-largest airport, is a prime tourism gateway – because the Western Cape is one of this country's major attractions. And, because the airport is often a visitor's first encounter with South Africa, it aims for world-class service and strives to offer everything a passenger might need - from accommodation to a VIP room. In fact, Cape Town International Airport has been the World Travel Awards' leading airport in Africa for six years in a row.
Traffic has grown strongly since 1994: the statistics show that aircraft movements have passed 60 000 a year. And projections have the total number of passengers at Cape Town International increasing from 5 million in 2003 to 14 million by 2015.
Rising traffic, of course, demands the constant development of services and facilities – something to which ACSA has committed R1-billion.
For example, the light and spacious International Arrivals terminal, which opened in March 2001, now has the capacity to process 950 passengers an hour.
And the R120-million International Departures terminal, which opened in February 2003, has 68 check-in counters and can handle up to 1 300 passengers an hour - three times that of its predecessor.
But, because the airport still lacks enough aircraft parking next to the main terminal buildings, the long-term plan is for remote parking alongside satellite terminals linked to the main building by an underground passage with travelators.
It's not only the increasing number of aircraft that need place to park: the projected growth in passenger volume means a corresponding increase in the number of cars at the airport. ACSA's plan is to build two parkades, linked to Domestic Arrivals and International Arrivals by elevated walkways.
Cape Town International Airport, however, is not just a doorway to southern Africa's premier international tourist destination for an ever-increasing number of visitors. Like its sister airport in Johannesburg, its role extends to the commercial world: it offers some fantastic business and property development opportunities. One planned development, Freight City, will accommodate the large number of freight agents who have offices at the airport but need warehouses in which to store goods.
Another unique feature of Cape Town International Airport is its fire and rescue simulator, the only one of its kind on the African continent.

DURBAN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
HELPDESK: +27 (0)31 451 6758
Every holiday season, thousands of tourists flock to KwaZulu-Natal's golden beaches, game parks and mountain ranges. The gateway to all of these attractions is Durban International Airport, which offers travellers everything from banking to Internet access and shopping.
But Durban doesn't only draw tourists and fun seekers – it also hosts a number of major international conferences and events. And so the airport, which plays an important role in Durban's status as the "convention city", has developed a reputation for handling dignitaries and delegates professionally and efficiently.
To meet the needs of travellers - 3,6 million of whom pass through the airport every year - the airport has undergone much development: the terminal building was recently upgraded and parking facilities have been revamped.
